A Fresh Start

“For behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.”
– Song of Solomon 2:11-12

Springtime has lots of meanings: renewal, rebirth, a fresh start. For many – myself included – it means yard work.

Last year, my overgrown flower beds filled me with anxiety. I regretted neglecting them, and the task of taming the weeds in their late summer strength seemed overwhelming. I longed for springtime, when I would have a fighting chance against the ferocious vegetation after a long winter.

We wait all winter long for spring, for many types of fresh starts: a new fitness routine, a new job, a new birth. However, isn’t it amazing that we, as followers of Christ, do not have to wait a whole year for the opportunity to start over spiritually?!

God gives us a fresh start at a life with him whenever – and as often – as we ask for it. Any day can be the day you first notice the blooming lilacs or the crab apple tree blossoms. Jesus gives us this gift as often as we ask for it, a fresh start.

Now if only Minnesota weather would cooperate!
